This copy has has some newspaper clippings from the 1930s and 1940s relating to rare book auctions sales pasted to the endpapers and included loosely. The rear endpaper has clippings about the sale of Mr L. M. Grace's library in 1934, which included Lee and Kendall's Grammar, White's Ancient History of the Maori, Buller's Birds of New Zealand, and a Maori "Bible" printed in Sydney in 1833 (this would have been extracts only as a complete bible in Maori was not published until 1868). ; 8vo

Small pinhole puncture hole through front board and first few leaves.; A reissue of the second edition, with a new title page (The second edition of Maunsell's grammar was first published in 1862). xvi, 168 pages. Original cloth boards. Page dimensions: 168 x 105mm. Maunsell (1810-1894) was the Archdeacon of Waikato and an important early translator of the Bible into Te Reo Maori. The first edition of his grammar was issued in four parts in the years 1842-1843. "Freed from the influence of the Northern District (which controlled mission printing and translation) Maunsell took tentative steps at reforming Maori orthography and adopting (in preference to the northern Ngapuhi dialect) the conventions of the Waikato dialect." - BIM, page 106. Some rubbing to ends of spine. Some small 1" splits to the gutter of the front endpaper at the front inner hinge. Minor foxing. Still a very nice copy, in the best condition that we have seen of this edition. ; The fifth edition of the New Testament in Maori (the first was in 1837). This copy is of interest both because of the superior binding and because of its provenance as belonging to Sarah Wanklyn. The binding is a contemporary full morocco binding, with gilt dentelles and gilt decoration to the edges of the boards. All page edges gilt. Pale yellow endpapers. Binder's ticket in corner of front endpaper "Williams & Norgate / London". Contemporary inscription on front endpaper: "Sarah Wanklyn with the best wishes of her affectionate Uncle Jas Jackson / Jan 21st 1853". Sarah Wanklyn was the wife of Bishop William Leonard Williams (1829-1916). William Leonard Williams, like his father Bishop William Williams (1800-1878), was a missionary and student of the Maori language. Pagination: [iv], 371, [1] pages. Page dimensions: 211 x 131mm. Spine leather mostly missing. Leather boards rubbed. A 2 1/2" x 3/8" surface chip shaved from leather on front board. Boards nearly detached, just hanging on by the cloth tape of the hinges. Internally text block in good condition. One corner clipped from title leaf. ; The fifth edition of the New Testament in Maori (the first was in 1837). This is a particularly special and clearly has been a much-loved copy, with extensive neat early (19th century) handwritten marginalia. The front endpaper has closely written neat handwriting in Te Reo Maori (the Maori language) filling the two blank pages, and the rear endpaper is similar filled with writing in English. Previous owner's name on the leaf following the title leaf: "A. A. W. Lea. Nelson. New Zealand". Also "von Isaac Hill. Nelson" in ink on the title page. Throughout the entire volume, a previous owner has neatly filled the spaces between the lines with the English translation of many of the Maori words. Also with some marginal comments, e.g. "The bloody issue healed" in the upper margin of Maka, Upoko 5 (Mark, Chapter 5) and "The ground & assurance of the Christians hope" in the upper margin of Nga Roma, Upoko 8 (Romans, Chapter 8). Pagination: [iv], 371, [1] pages. Full leather binding. Page dimensions: 211 x 134mm. Small early binder's ticket in corner of rear endpaper "Watkins Binder". This was the first edition in which "wh" was used. The translation was revised by Robert Maunsell and William Williams. [Bibliographical References: BIM 419; Williams 233; Bagnall 456].; 8vo

The second edition of the complete Maori bible. The first complete Maori bible was published in 1868 (this was preceded by editions of the New Testament and various compilations of chapters from the old testament). This second edition has a printed date on the title page of 1887. This date was when printing began, but due to printing delays the actual publication date was 1889 (see BIM 1241). 855, [1], 270, 4, [2] pages. Separate title page for the new testament, also with printed date of 1887. Full leather binding. Blind tooled pattern to boards.Page dimensions: 212 x 129mm. All page edges gilt. Owner's rubber name stamp: "F M Hill 3 Risk Rd Remuera Akd". Rebacked with most of original spine laid down. Boards rubbed. Heavy rubbing and wear to edges and corners of boards. Most leather rubbed away along top edges of boards, 1" loss of leather along edges of lower corners of boards. Endpapers replaced. A couple of 1/2" tears to margins of title leaf.
