Ex-library, library stamps and markings. A worn copy. 3" dampstain to cloth on front board. Somedhesive tape stains to boards. Hinges broken, with old adhesive tape repairs and adhesive tape stains to endpapers. A 1 3/8" chip and large 3" abrasion to front free endpaper. Chips and tears to blank margin of final text leaf, this leaf also detached and taped in with adhesive tape. Dustjacket with extensive adhesive tape, masking tape, and brown paper repairs. Dustjacket separated into 2 pieces along the front joint of the dustjacket spine. Dustjacket is not price-clipped, although the price is covered over with masking tape. Dustjacket protected in archival mylar cover. ; Fourth impression, November 1955. 423, [1] pages. Red cloth boards with gilt lettering on spine. Top page edges dyed red. Page dimensions: 220 x 136mm. "This book is largely concerned with Hobbits, and from its pages a reader may discover much of their character and a little of their history." - the opening sentence of the Prologue. ; 8vo

London George Allen & Unwin (1957-1959) Hardcover Very Good- in Very Good- dust jacket 
Fading and moderate foxing to dustjacket spines. Dustjacket on "The Fellowship of the Ring" has a 2" pen mark on the rear panel, and small 3/8" tears at the head of the dustjacket spine. Dustjacket on "The Two Towers" has a 1 1/2" black mark on the rear joint. No tears or chips to this jacket. Dustjacket on "The Return of the King" is price-clipped, and has small 3/8" tears at the head of the dustjacket spine, and a small 3/8" tear to the top of the front panel. "The Fellowship of the Ring" has a previous owner's name and address twinked out (whited out) on the front endpaper. Contemporary bookseller's rubber stamp on front endpaper of the first two volumes. Short ink annotation on front endpaper of "The Two Towers", reads " See vol. 1". The final text leaf of "The Two Towers" has quite heavy creasing and crinkling to the lower part of the leaf and a 1/2" tear to the margin. Some spots of foxing to page edges. Overall a near very good set of early printings of this 20th century classic, from the original UK publisher. ; The three volumes of The Lord of the Rings. Reprints of the first edition, as follows: The Fellowship of the Ring: 7th printing (1957), in an 8th printing dustjacket (probably as issued - there is no evidence the jacket has been supplied or swapped around.); The Two Tower: 6th printing (1959), in a 6th printing dustjacket.; The Return of the King: 4th printing (1958), in a 4th printing dustjacket. Red cloth boards with gilt on spine. Page dimensions: 222 x 140mm. Top page edges dyed red. Folding map present at rear of each volume. ; 8vo
