The Practice of Quixotism - Postmodern Theory and Eighteenth-Century Women's Writing, Gordon, Scott Paul
207 Gordon, Scott Paul The Practice of Quixotism - Postmodern Theory and Eighteenth-Century Women's Writing
New York Palgrave Macmillan (2006) 047314428X / 9780473144289 First Edition Hardcover Fine in Fine dust jacket
Dust-jacket protected in archival mylar cover.; viii, 240 pages. Blue boards with white lettering on spine. Page dimensions: 210 x 139mm. "The Practice of Quixotism models how to think simultaneously about postmodern theory and eighteenth-century texts. The postmodern claim that we encounter "reality" only through cultural scripts of which we are unaware has a long history: eighteenth-century writers thought about this same possibility with the help of quixote figures, who view the "real" through texts they have read. Focusing on unorthodox quixote narratives written by eighteenth-century women, many now popular in today's classroom, The Practice of Quixotism will fascinate readers interested in recent theory, in eighteenth-century culture, in eighteenth-century women writers-or in the descendants of Don Quixote, who celebrated his 400th birthday in 2005." Contents: Introduction: The Quixote Trope Historicizing Quixote and the Scandal of Quixotism Charlotte Lennox's Female Quixote and Orthodox Quixotism Suspicion and Experience in Sarah Fielding's David Simple Mary Wortley Montagu and the Quixotic Dream of Objectivity Quixotic Perception in Sophia Lee's The Recess Ann Radcliffe's The Mysteries of Udolpho and the Practice of Quixotism Epilogue: Beyond Quixotism?: Quixotism and Contemporary Theory.

"And in the fields and by the brooks / The golden King-cups lie; / Then as the days grew long, dear Nurse, / Would we go forth every day, / The pleasant pasture lands among / Where the merry lambkins play; / There we would search about for flowers, / Our little lamb to deck, / And weave upon her head a crown, / And chains around her neck, / The purple Orchis, with the Vetch / And wood Anenmone; / But not a flower among them all / Would be so fair as she!" - from the poem "The Sisterless" (p. 136.) Selected poem titles: The Song of Death; The Deformed Child; The Rejected; The Child of Sorrow; The Daughters of the Hall; Mignon's Song; The Vigil of Rizpah; On Reading the Legendary Tales of the Baron and Baroness de la Motte Fouque. Dora Greenwell (1821-1882). "At its best, Greenwell's poetry is strongly impassioned, whether in the vigorous movement of 'A Scherzo' or the rapid couples of 'Madana' (on the Hindu cupid). But, driven by religious conviction, her writing could be as solemn as it is exuberant. Her most explicitly devotional writings lay a firm emphasis on the need to commune with other souls" - Armstrong & Bristow, "Nineteenth-Century Women Poets", page 438. [Seller ref: Knightcol] ; 16mo

Tsugaru: Regional Identiy on Japan's Northern Periphery, Guo, Nanyan; Seiichi Hasegawa; Henry Johnson; Hidemichi Kawanishi; Kanako Kitahara; Anthony Rausch
218 Guo, Nanyan; Seiichi Hasegawa; Henry Johnson; Hidemichi Kawanishi; Kanako Kitahara; Anthony Rausch Tsugaru: Regional Identiy on Japan's Northern Periphery
Dunedin University of Otago PRess (2005) 1877372080 / 9781877372087 First Edition Softcover Very Good+ with No dust jacket as issued
149 pages + xvi pages of illustrations. Page dimensions: 234 x 154mm. "Tsugaru is located in the north-east of Japan's large island of Honshu." "With a rugged landscape and challenging weather, it was bypassed by Japan's industrial development after World War II. It has remained relatively rustic, with its countryside dotted with rice paddies and apple orchards. As a result, it is rich in culture and diversity, with people of many different dialects and traditions. This book serves both as an introduction to the region and as an essay on regional identity in the modern state. The contributing authors, from Japan and New Zealand, began working together as academics located in unique regions: Tsugaru and Otago. In a series of interesting essays they examine many aspects of Tsugaru life and culture: some history (including the arrival of Christian missionaries in the nieneteenth century), the 'Tsugaru shamisen' (a unique folk musical instrument enjoying a revival in Japanese popular music), the region's distinctive lacquerware, sculpture, literature (looking at the work of writers Dazai Osamu and Osabe Hideo) and performing arts. The resulting volume is both interesting and comprehensive in examining Tsugaru's identity in modern Japan."
