Lower edges of boards rubbed and rough, with loss of cloth along lower 3 1/2" of lower edge of front board near spine. Some fraying and small chips to cloth at ends of spine and corners of boards. Plate 10 bound in at rear. Provenance: J. W. Harding, Mount Vernon, with rubber stamps on endpapers. ; Frontispiece (portrait illustration, Wiremu Te Manawa) + [2 (illustrated title leaf,1901 imprint)] + [2 (letterpress title,1866 imprint] + v ( General Index) + [1 (illustration, dogskin mat)] + 438 pages + [2 (portrait illusration, Tawhaio)]. 74 plate leaves (including 7 printed in red and black of rafter patterns). 65 numbered plates (the others without numbering). Contemporary plain cloth binding with gilt title "Maori Art" on spine. Moire pattern to cloth. Page dimensions: 310 x 247mm. Full title of Part One: "The Art Workmanship of the Maori Race in New Zealand: A Series of Illustrations from Specially Taken Photographs with Descriptive Notes and Essays on the Canoes, Habitations, Weapons, Ornaments, and Dress of the Maoris. Together with Lists of the Words in the Maori Language Used in Relation to the Subjects".
