The Introduction begins: "The venereal disease, which, according to historians of the most undoubted credit, is a native of some of the American isalnds, especially Hispaniola, was brought into Spain near the end of the fifteenth Century, and thence carried into Naples [...]". "Some of the tribes of Indians, in the back parts of America, eat the serpents which they happen to kill in their hunting parties; such as the horned, the rattle, and the mukasoe snakes. [...] This curious circumstance I often had related to me by many of the sage farmers of North America, when I was in that part of the world; some of them of a very philosophic turn of mind: but it is very ingeniously related to me of late by a gentleman of strict honour and integrity, a native of North Carolina, who being a staunch loyalist, forsook an ample fortune in that country to support the royal cause. The following instance he has related to me among many. That he was once present, when a rattle sake, about three feet and half in length, had bit a horse as he was feeding in a meadow which had been mowed. The snake being observed by some workmen, was instantly surrounded by them, who, with long sticks, confined the animal to a small spot of ground in the same meadow. Contemporary binding of half calf and marbled papered boards. Binding poor, with joints broken and nearly half of leather spine missing. Remaining piece of spine is almost detached. Internally very good. Chip to blank margin of pp. 195-196. Page dimensions: 328 x 205mm. Contemporary owner's signature "Alex Willis". The Governor of New Zealand during this period was Sir George Grey. Includes information on the Milita and Volunteer forces, reports of troop activities, names of killed and wounded, the Waikato, New Plymouth, Paparoa, Paparata, Taranaki, Maori rebels, land purchases, notices to mariners, rules and regulations for the Gold fields, and in general all the varied business of the government. Issue Number 29 is a letter, bi-lingual in English and Maori, from Governor George Grey addressed to the Chiefs of Waikato: "Chiefs of Waikato, Europeans quietly living on their own lands in Waikato have been driven away; their property has been plundered; their wives and children have been taken from them. By the instigation of some of you, officers and soldiers were murdered at Taranaki. Others of you have since expressed approval of these murders [. . .] You are now assembling in armed bands; you are constantly threatening to come down the river to ravage the settlement of Auckland, and to murder peacable settlers [. . .]" Issue 33 (29 July 1863) has a report from Colonel Alfred F. W. Wyatt on fighting in bush near Kerikeri: "a rapid and continuous fusilade was opened on the natives ensconced in the gullies and sheltered by trees from the fire of the 2B. 18th regiment. // Being completely taken by surprise, they, after a smart action of about ten minues, fled towards the denser bush; but the darkness which had now began [sic] to set in, rendered all attempts at searching for their dead and wounded perfectly futile."; Folio

[NB: Although there is no Gazette numbered as Vol. V No. 24, the pagination runs continuously from No. 14 up to No. 32, so possibly none was issued as No. 24.] Unbound. Folded sheets or occasionally single leaves. Dimensions: 333 x 210mm. Government crest engraving with lion and unicorn on each gazette. Vol. V No. 1 is signed by T. M. Hocken. Impressions from relief printing process very noticeable on versos. Fairly early examples of printing in New Zealand. No. 12 includes a lengthy report from Lieut.-Col W. Hulme on the war in the Bay of Islands, together with a list of those "killed and wounded in the action near the rebel chief Heke's camp, on the 8th May, 1845." "In obedience to Your Excellency's instructions, I prepared to attack the rebel Chiefs and to destroy their property; and as Pomare was one of the proscribed Chiefs, and his pah the most exposed to an attack, the North Star and Transports got under weigh on the morning of 29th April, and proceeded to Otuhu, but light winds delayed the vessels until midnight, at which time they anchored off Pomare's pah. // At daylight, I was much surprised to see a white flag flying in Pomare's pah, but as the Proclamation only authorized loyal Natives to shew it, I could not recognize it as an emblem of peace from a supposed rebel [...]".
