1 Cruise, Richard A. Journal of a Ten Months' Residence in New Zealand
London Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, Brown, and Green 1824 Second Edition Cloth Good with no dust jacket
The second edition, published with some small changes and additions a year after the first. (iii)-vi, 327, [1] pages + frontispiece. Lacking the half-title page and errata slip. One leaf, pages 69-70, has a 40 x 10mm chip missing, although it is reasonably easy to determine what the lost text in this area should be. The frontispiece is a portrait of "Tetoro, A Chief of New Zealand". Rebound in relatively recent black cloth boards. Later patterned endpapers. Spine title: "Cruise's New Zealand / 1824". Page dimensions: 214 x 133mm. Quite heavy dampstains and tidemarks to the frontispiece plate. Some small red stains to title page. Generally very good internally. Moderate foxing to margins of some leaves. Moderate rubbing, fading and flecking to cloth boards. "The incidents recorded in the following pages were noted down while fresh in his memory, and generally on the same day on which they occurred; they are presented to the reader in this state, which, while it ends to establish their accuracy, necessarily restricts the narrative to the simple and abrupt form of a journal." - from the Preface. [Reference: Bagnall 1503, 1504. "Cruise [. . .] had time to record his impressions of the region and of Maori society during the climax of Hongi's influence and the intertribal wars. Contrasts to the tensions and brutalities come from not uncommon vignettes on more peaceful aspects of Maori character and activity."] ; 8vo
