12 leaves (pages 45-56 + plates 1 to 6) not bound in, and inserted loosely. These leaves have slightly wider margins than the other leaves, as they have not been trimmed by the binder. Lower edges of boards rubbed and rough, with loss of cloth along lower 3 1/2" of lower edge of front board near spine. Some fraying and small chips to cloth at ends of spine and corners of boards. Plate 10 bound in at rear. Provenance: J. W. Three unbound parts, as issued. Chips and tears to margins of front wrapper. Part IV lacking the rear paper wrapper. Chips to margin of rear wrapper of Part V. Suitable for binding into a bound volume. Inside rear wrapper of Part V has a "Note Regarding Binding"- "Binding Cases for the Volume (now completed) may be had from the Publishers. They are of Art Canvas, and handsomely decorated with Maori designs, blocked in gold. Price, 4s. 6d. Subscribers may send their unbound parts to the Publishers, who will supply cover and bind up at a uniform charge of 9s. 6d." ; Parts 3, 4 and 5 only of five parts. Numerous b&w illustrations from photographs. Page dimensions: 312 x 255mm. Part III is printed 1898, Part IV printed 1899, and Part V has a date of 1900 on the title leaf and of 1901 on the front wrapper. This work was originally published in 5 parts, the first part in 1896 and the fifth in 1900. A fire destroyed most copies of the first printing of Part Five, but according to Bagnall "a second printing was made soon afterwards".
