Some rubbing and light marks to boards. A small 1/8" chip to cloth in front joint. A small 1/4" tear to cloth at tail of spine. Inner hinges intact. A few spots of foxing. ; 335 pages. Brown cloth boards with gilt illustration of a mammoth skeleton on front board. Page dimensions: 175 x 119mm. Many engraved illustrations, including a frontispiece, several full page illustrations and smaller in-text illustrations. "A chapter on the Antiquity of Man has been added, in which the conclusions of the best authorities are stated, it is hoped, honestly and impartially." - from the Preface. No date [c.1870s]. 120 pages + 21 engraved plates. Dimensions: 10 3/4" by 8 3/8". No preliminary leaves are present. No frontispiece or title page. The plates have "William Mackenzie, London, Edinburgh & Glasgow" printed in the margins. Rebound in black cloth covers. Cloth covers very rubbed and worn and stained. Gutters cracked at hinges. Internally good. Foxing to first few text leaves, quite heavy spotted foxing to page 1. Occasional foxing and light browning throughout. 1/2" page corner missing to three text leaves. Tissue guards to plates mostly present. Tissue guards to plates have moderate foxing. Tissue guards often folded and creased. Plates generally ly clean with some finger mark smudges and small creases to margins. The plates are titled: 1. Lake of Constanz, and the Islands of Manau and Reichenau; 2. Bregenz; 3. Friedrichshafen; 4. Schaffhausen; 5. Rhine Falls (3/8" tear in margin of this plate) ; 7. Laufenburg; 8. Rheinfelden; 9. Eglisau; 10. Basle; 11. Strasburg; 12. Speier; 13. Freiburg; 14. Heidelberg; 15. Mannheim; 16. Oppenheim; 17. Mayence; 18. Elfeldt; 19. St. Goarhausen; 20. Bacharach. 21. Ehrenbreitstein; 21. Bonn; 22. Cologne. A couple of small puncture holes going through the front board and leaves up to page 20, and some smaller indented holes. Corner clipped from title leaf, without loss of text. Some pencil marginalia.; Uncommon. [iv], 344 pages + 4 pages advertisements. Dark green cloth boards with gilt lettering on spine and front board, black decoration to boards and spine. Page dimensions: 183 x 120mm. Chapters on Maximilien Robespierre; Robert Burns; Benjamin Robert Haydon; Heinrich Heine; Edgar Allan Poe; and Thaddeus Kosciusko. The chapter on Poe is very unflattering - "As it was, he did but little - a few poems, a few prose sketches - and is remembered almost as much for the mournfulness of his career as for the quality of his contributions to American literature" - page 298.
