Small 1/4" dent to edge of front board. Some bruising to corners. Joints rubbed, with some tiny chips to cloth along rear joint. Hinges worn, with splits to gutters at endpapers. Bookseller's ticket of Newbold's, Dunedin on front endpaper. A couple of previous owners' signatures on front endpaper and on title page. Internally very good.; This is an 1875 reprint of a title originally published in 1870. xvi, 384 pages + 31, [1] pages advertisements. Publisher's green cloth boards with gilt letttering and rule on spine. "SECOND EDITION" in gilt at tail of spine. Page dimensions: 189 x 125mm. Dark brown endpapers. "Every naturalist who has directed his attention to the subject of the geographical distribution of animals and plants, must have been interested in the singular facts which it presents." - the opening sentence of the first essay, "On the Law which has Regulated the Introduction of New Species". This essay was written by Wallace at Sarawak in 1855, and first published in the "Annals and Magazine of Natural History" in September 1855.

A piece clipped from the title leaf, 34 x 52mm, with loss of the final "s" and following comma from the word "Floras". Hinges split along gutters. ; xvii, [3], 526 pages + [2] pages advertisements + frontispiece map + 2 full-page map. 23 other illustrations (mostly maps) within the pagination. Original green cloth boards with gilt on spine and gilt western hemisphere vignette on front board. Page dimensions: 225 x 151mm. Top page edges gilt. Important work of zoogeography, by contemporary of Charles Darwin. Provenance: contemporary bookseller's blindstamp of A. Simpson, Christchurch on front endpaper. Gift inscription dated 1931 from J. J. Kinsey to Johannes C. Andersen, "from his friend and companion". Kinsey (1852-1936) was an avid New Zealand book collector whose collection ended up in the Alexander Turnbull library. Mount Kinsey and Cape Kinsey in Antarctica are named for him, for his contributions to the work in New Zealand of the British Antarctic expeditions in the early 20th century [Reference: Bell, David. "Kinsey and the Collectors". New Zealand Journal of Asian Studies 16, 2 (December 2014)]. Johannes Andersen (1873-1962) was an editor of the Polynesian Society's Journal, the first librarian of the Alexander Turnbull library, and the author of many anthropological works, and the book collecting title "The Lure of New Zealand Book Collecting" (1936). ; 8vo

A nice copy of the 1903 edition. ; "New Edition / Revised and largely Re-written". xii, 527, [1] pages. Portrait frontispiece within the pagination. 107 in-text figures. Red cloth boards with blind-stamped floral pattern on spine and front board, black lettering on spine and front board. Page dimensions: 193 x 133mm. The chapter on photography includes descriptions and explanations of the Woodbury-Type, the Collotype, the Photogravure, and the Half-Tone Process. "The great range and value of the commonest and cheapest form of photographic reproduction - the process-plate - is well shown by the accompanying three specimens of ordinary book illustration [. . .] the facility for producing such pictures is now so great that we have presented to us in our books and periodicals the scenes of public and private life in every part of the world, enabling us to realise the manners and customs and the material surrounding of foreign people in a way that no earlier epoch as ever enjoyed." - pp. 127-9.
