Some bruising to corners and edges of boards. 1/8" fraying to cloth at corners of boards. Narrow split to gutter at front hinge. Rear hinge intact. Some foxing to endpapers. Internally clean. ; xxx, 414, [1] pages + frontispiece. Numerous full page and in-text illustrations. Red cloth boards with elaborate gilt illustrations on spine and front board. Page dimensions: 205 x 140mm. Dark green endpapers. All page edges gilt. With an eleven page preface by John Cameron Grant. Mandeville was a fictional figure, but his travels were based on the accounts of real travellers, including Friar Odoric. His "Travels" were first published in Anglo-Norman French between 1357 and 1371. There have been numerous editions since, including a scholarly two volume edition by the Hakluyt Society in 1953.; 8vo
