40mm blank corner missing to title leaf, also a 10mm tear to margin. Some foxing and staining to title leaf. Moderate foxing to plates. Binder's ticket on front endpaper, Leightons, Auckland. Lacking the two copper engravings, these being the frontispiece portrait of "Aranghie", and the plate facing page 258 "A New Zealand Girl". The five aquatint plates are all present. Page margins cropped during rebinding, with loss of most of the caption to one of the plates, "New Zealand Method of Tattooing". ; 232 pages + 5 of 7 plates (lacking frontispiece and 1 other plate). Rebound in 20th century in green cloth boards. Page dimensions: 207 x 129mm. Page edges sprinkled. The five plates present are titled: "A Tabbood Store House in New Zealand"; "A Dance of New Zealanders"; "New Zealand Method of Tattooing"; "A New Zealand War Speech"; and "Governor Glass and his residence at Tristan d' Acunha". [Bibliographical reference: Bagnall 1757 - "The Narrative crisply depicts the set scenes such as tatooing, the haka, a hui to discuss peace or war, the grimmer aspects of eliminating an expendable slave or errant wife, but an almost pastoral glimpse of village agriculture."; Collier 16; Ellis 76; Hocken 51; Sabin 21624.] ; 8vo
