Wodrow Thomson dated 1890 on front endpaper. Some foxing. ; This volume consists of Numbers 1-11, New Series, (January-November 1867) of the periodical "The Bond of Brotherhood", edited by Elihu Burritt, together with Volume 1, Numbers 1 to 12 (January-December 1868) of the periodical "Fire-Side Words" by Elihu Burritt. The "Bond of Brotherhood" issues have the imprint London: S. W. Partridge & Co. at the end of each issue. The "Fire-Side Words" issues have the publisher's imprint London: Simpkin, Marshall and Co. [ii], 192, 190 pages + [2] page list of works by Elihu Burritt published by Sampson Low, Sons, and Marston, by Cassell, Petter and Galpin, and by S. W. Partridge and Co. Green blind-stamped cloth boards with gilt lettering on spine. Page dimensions: 199 x 129mm. Burritt (1810-1879) was an American antislavery, temperance and peace activist. He was appointed by Abraham Lincoln as US Consul in Birmingham. Both periodicals in this volume are aimed at younger readers. The publisher's advertisement for this volume is: "This is a large and elegantly bound book of about 400 pages, made up of "The Fire-side Words for 1868," and "The Bond of Brotherhood for 1867;" including Fire-side Lessons in twenty-five languages; Jacob and Joseph, and the Lessons of their Lives for the Young; Portraits and Biographies of Joseph Sturge, Dr. Andrew Reed, Dr. Livingstone, Thomas Shillito, George Peabody and Edmund Fry. Among other papers written for children, are Letters between English and American dogs." Page 127 of "The Bond of Brotherhood" has some references to slavery, in a paragraph about William Lloyd Garrison - "He has lived to see the last fetter of African Slavery in America broken, and the whole system trodden out of existence."
