"The following pages were extracted from notes, taken whilst on the 'grand tour' with Te Whiti and Tohu, but with no intention to publish them. Not at all: it was simply done to while away the monotony of my existence during the latter part of last year. A friend happening to peruse them one day, advised me to publish them, as it would afford a lot of people, he said, the opportunity, both in the Colony and out of it, to judge of this celebrity, TE WHITI, as he really is." - from the Preface. [Bibliographical reference: Bagnall 5869 - "Sympathetic account of Te Whiti and Tohu's year in custody after their seizure at Parihaka."]
