Both volumes with previous owner's signature "T M Chambers". Part One has the signature in ink and pencil on the front endpaper. Part Two has the signature in pencil on front endpaper, dated 1932. Part Two has some bruising to upper corners of boards, and slight creasing to upper corners of leaves throughout. Part One with offsetting to endpapers (light brown colour to paper caused by proximity to the glue in the pastedown endpapers). Both volumes, some fading to spines. ; Two volumes (complete). Part I: [4], xvii, [5], 193, [1] pages + frontispiece illustration (portrait of "H. T. Whatahoro / The Scribe / 1912"). Part II: vi, [2], 279, [1], viii pages. Original red cloth boards with black lettering on spines and front boards. Page dimensions: 215 x 138mm. Text in Maori and English. Part One, "Things Celestial", published in 1913, as Volume III of the Memoirs of the Polynesian Society. Part Two on "Things Terrestrial" published two years later in 1915 as Volume IV of the Memoirs of the Polynesian Society. Maori cosmology and spiritual beliefs; Maori legends; legends of Maui; astronomy; Maori gods; genealogies; migrations. Part II is reprinted from the 'Journal of the Polynesian Society", Vols. 22-24 (first edition in book form.)
