The Auckland Students' Association Press was run by Bob Lowry and Ronald Holloway. Lowry's operation of the press and production of the "Phoenix" journal (which had 4 issues in total in its short life), was "proscribed" by the university authorities, after which Lowry moved south to Christchurch. "Valley of Decision" was published as "Phoenix Miscellany: 1". In a note to a collection of his poetry published in 1974, Curnow wrote of this title: "In 'Valley of Decision', and after it, some crisis or change from faith to scepticism may be read, however perplexed and precarious the faith was, and the scepticism no less so."
