Tipped in at the rear of Volume Three, preceding the advertisements, is a handwritten letter from the owner of this set (Mr Lance) to the author, together with a four page reply from the author, dated 1880. The author's letter acknowledges the new information supplied by his correspondent, which he intends to include in the next edition. "I am very much obliged to you for your letter. [. . .] Tis not too late to make corrections for the second edition and I shall avail myself of the information you have kindly given me when I prepare that. Mess. Allen & Co printed 1500 copies; they have sold not quite a thousand so that we may expect a new edition about March. I am just about (next week) to start for India to spend the cold weather months there, but I shall return in March, & meanwhile shall leave with Allen & Co. a corrected copy of the first edition [. . .] I shall also thankfully avail myself of the information you have given me about Ra'o Sahib."; 8vo 8" - 9" tall
