Early leather spine laid down on the rebacked spine, though the early spine does not particularly match the diced calf boards (the boards I think may be earlier than the laid-down portion of spine.) A large tear across one leaf, pages 23-24, without loss. Foxing. Engraved titlepage with quite heavy foxing, and short tears to margins. Frontispiece rubbed with abrasions and foxing. A 2" repaired tear to the title leaf. Early owner's inscription: Hannah Phipps / Her Book - / The Gift of her Mother / May 22nd, 1831". ; "The Second Edition, Improved." xiv, (15)-768 pages + engraved frontispiece + extra engraved title leave + 2 plate leaves (Alphabet; some maxims and a sample letter). Contemporary boards, rebacked in leather. Diced calf with gilt borders. Page dimensions: 201 x 127mm. Marbled endpapers. "As it is a necessary part of a young woman's education to possess some knowledge of grammar, the female youth is here presented with a concise and simple system, in order to remove those objections which exist to many others; namely, that of their being too prolix, dry, and uninteresting." - page 23.
