Rutherford was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1908. In 1911 he performed his famous "splitting the atom" experiments, in which he bombarded gold foil with alpha particles. His 1919 paper on those experiments was selected for Carter & Muir's 1967 "Printing and the Mind of Man" (#411).
