Boards with moderate rubbing, foxing, and dust stains. Vertical creasing to spine cloth. Small 1/4" loss of paper at tips of corners of boards. Some patchy foxing to a few text pages. Hinges weak with the gutters split at the endpapers. Overall though a nice copy of this title. The plates, including the albumen "Moriori" photograph are all in very good condition, with tissue guards present. Provenance: Early Christchurch bookseller's blindstamp on front endpaper "A. Simpson Late J. Hughes". Early owner's signature on front endpaper "John D. [Enys?]" (1837-1894?) - "Enys developed a close friendship with Julius Haast, the provincial geologist, whom he had met soon after his arrival in Canterbury, and accompanied Haast on a number of expeditions. He was active in promoting the objects of the Philosophical Institute of Canterbury, and his particular contribution was to introduce in the Canterbury Provincial Council in November 1870 the ordinance which provided for the permanent establishment of the Canterbury Museum."- DNZB. ; The very scarce first edition. [1-6] [v]-vii [1] [1]-301 [1 (blank)] pages . Green cloth spine with green papered boards. Red lettering and black illustration on paper on front board. Page dimensions: 211mm x 136mm. "The settlement of these islands, which is being hastened onwards with rapid strides, affecting as it must, considerable alterations in their physical aspect, necessarily invovles great and important changes in the condition of the animal and vegetable life of the country." - the opening sentence. The four plates are: (1) facing page 113: "Nest of Bell Bird", (Lyttelton Times Co., lithograph); (2) facing page 160: "Portrait of a Moriori - January - 1879" (E. Dossetter, Christchurch, mounted albumen photographic print); (3) facing page 184: "Sheep Attacked By A Kea" (Lyttelton Times Co., lithograph); (4) facing page 201: "Nest of Saddle-Back", Lyttelton Times Co., lithograph). Tissue guards present to all plates. [References: Bagnall 4664 - "A series of notes on New Zealand natural history, chiefly ornithological observations, reprinted from the 'New Zealand Country Journal' and elsewhere. The work, written in a pleasant, warm, if somewhat emotive style, reflects the author's range of observation both as a field naturalist and as a successful gardener long resident at Ohinetahi, Governor's Bay [. . .] There is also an account of the meeting of Grey and Sheehan with Tawhiao at Hikurangi, Te Kopua, Waikato, in May 1879."; Lawlor, "Books and Bookmen" (1954, page 206): "Potts, T. H. (1823-88) - There cannot be more than a few dozen copies of his little nature book scattered about the country. Its title is arresting - just the simple words 'Out in the Open.' Its paper covers have not stood up to the years bu this makes little difference to the price it brings - anything up to fifteen guineas. In spite of this and its extreme rarity I saw three good copies of it in the library of one voracious collector. Potts must have been an interesting old fellow. There is a little known picture of him in the first edition of Hutton and Drummon's 'Animals of New Zealand' (1904) which becomes more rare on this account than later editions. The picture is in the old style. Potts, plus an overlong beard is seated by one of those inevitable photographer's pedestals on which is a stuffed kiwi. Although the bird seems to be picking the fingers of Potts, the old gentleman has a placid look about him. He carries more than the average allowance of flesh countering somewhat the 'out in the open ' aspect. I am keen to add a copy of Potts to my library, but it must be a good clean specimen."] ; 8vo
