Lacking 1 plate. Original boards, rebacked with later cloth spine, with title piece of original spine laid down. Original endpapers preserved, with tidy paper reinforcement at gutters of hinges. Presentation copy with inscription from author on front free endpaper. Another early signature on front pastedown endpaper: "J. Lawson / 1835". Later pencil marginalia about the recipient on front free endpaper. Moderate foxing to the frontispiece. Folding map in very good condition. ; This copy with an inscription by the author on front endpaper: "The Rev. H. G. Watkins / Rector of St. Swithins / with the Auh'rs most affectionate / Christian Remembrance / Sep. 4 -1835". First edition (A second edition was published in the same year.) [8], 310, [10 (Index)] pages + frontispice + 8 of 9 plates (1 hand coloured) + 1 folding map. The missing plate is "South-West View of the Waimate", called for facing page 92. The colour plate shows the Standard of New Zealand and four Signal Flags. Original cloth boards, rebacked with title section of original cloth spine laid down. Page dimensions: 198 x 123mm. [Bibliographical reference: Bagnall 6205 - "His book, better written and printed than most of the period, is in five chapters, the first two being the customary formal description, followed by an extended treatment of the Maori, social life and customs, intertribal war, Hongi, etc.; the second half of the text outlines the establishment of the mission, its extension to Kaitaia and Thames (Puriri) with much on the adoption of Christianity by various individuals. Yate's residence coincided with the first significant spread of belief among the northern tribes and he includes 30 letters from Maori Christians (p. 250-281). More significant are the occasional extracts from his journal, e.g. his sharp, sensitive record of the first Sunday service at Whakawhitira, Waiapu [. . .]"]
