Previous owner' signature "J G Wilson / Netherby / 1924" (James Gordon Wilson 1882-1967, historian). Some foxing to page edges. Some minor creasing to cloth at head of spine. Overall a nice copy of this title.; 1909 edition, altered and expanded from the edition of 1907. xiv, [2], 499, [1] pages + frontispiece + 6 plates + 4 maps on 5 plate leaves (inc. 2 folding, 1 double page map.) Without the Corrigenda slip. Green cloth boards with gilt lettering and decoration on spine. Page dimensions: 214 x 135mm. The preface to the 1909 edition notes the expansion in coverage from the 1907 edition - "When its preparation came to be undertaken it was found that no satisfactory historical arrangement could be made, on the base of dealing with only the southern portion of the South Island. The bay whaling, which succeeded the sealing, was common to the whole Island, and no treatment of it was complete which did not take up the history of the coastline as far north as Cook Strait." - pp. x-xi. An edition of 515 copies.
