"In the days of old, ere this delightful Island of New Zealand was visited by war, and the aboriginal inhabitants seized with the desire to have a king to reign over them, this term 'runanga' was little known among ordinary folks. But no sooner does agitation commence, and it becomes a matter of necessity, as well as policy, to discover the political bearing of the various tribes, than we hear nothing but 'runanga' going on all over the country. Archdeacon Williams translates the word 'runanga' 'a council,' and illustrates it with the remark 'Kei te runanga to tatou hoa;' Anglice: 'Our friend is at the Council.'" - page 38. [Reference: Bagnall 3644a - "'Many errors' in first edition allegedly corrected but text of sketches the same."' c.f. Hocken states that Moser was Eyre's private secretary and went to New South Wales in 1863 where he contributed to various newspapers."; Hocken 225 - "Describes most humorously some aspects of native life, native ministers, magistrates, policemen, and other outcomes of civilisation, and 'missionary influence.' The author was a Cambridge man, private secretary to Governor Eyre, and a member of the Colonial Force. He left for New South Wales in 1863, and was there a contributor to various papers. He died in 1900, aet. 69."]
