Book Condition: Very Good- with no dust jacket
Rebound in 20th century in 19th century style half leather and marbled papered boards. Later endpapers. Pages all very clean. The leaves appear to have been washed, removing most of the marbling from the page edges. Blind-stamp on title page of each volume: "St. Johnsbury Athenaeum 1870". No other institutional markings. Volume Two with 40mm tear and small chips to final leaf of index, with loss of a few letters of text on page 480. The missing letters have been written in pencil in the margin. Volume Two with 10 leaves (pages 267-286) detached from stitching (except at lower stitch), and standing a little proud from the text block. ; Two volumes (complete). Volume one: [4], [iv], 420 pages. Illustrations on 26 pages (mostly full page). Volume two: [4], iv, 480 pages. Illustrations on 28 pages (some full page). Page dimensions: 191 x 114mm. This set is the first edition, and not "The Library of Entertaining Knowledge" edition that was issued in the same year.
