"Walpole explained it in a letter of January 28, 1754. Alluding to a 'faury tale, called 'The Three Princes of Serendip',' he wrote, 'as their highnesses travelled, they were always making discoveries, by accidents and sagacity, of things which they were not in quest of . . .' There are several versions of the tale. The one which he read was in French, published in Amsterdam in 1721 and entitled 'Voyage . . . des trois princes de Serendip'. A still earlier version was published in Italian in 1557. The book you are reading is an adaptation of the old story based on an English version of it called 'The Travels and Adventures of Three Princes of Serendip . . . London, Printed for Will. Chetwood . . ." in 1722. [. . .] Although a fairy tale, the period of this story is in the fifth century A.D. in the royal days of Anuradhapura in Ceylon, the Sassanian Empire in Persia, and famous dynasties such as those of the Gupta Empire and the Vakatakas in the land of India." - from "Notes", page 4.
