The author thanks the Chinese Government "who looked after me so well, and made available to me so much material" (p. X) . The book contains much praise for the development, modernisation and secularization of Tibet - "Today, new Lhasa is growing, and the old city is diminishing in size. I saw a bulldozer destroying some houses, which will be rebuilt with modern conveniences. The whole structure upon which old Lhasa lived has gone, and the shops, which were of craftsmen turning out objects of religious worship, sculptures, jewellery, and leather goods, have become cooperatives, still functioning, but directed towards consumption by the people themselves, or for export [...]". Heinrich Harrer gives an opinion of this book in his "Return to Tibet". ; 8vo
